Bad Habits to Avoid When You Have Dental Implants

Posted on 1/23/2023 by Dr. Shaun Rai
Bad Habits to Avoid When You Have Dental ImplantsWhen you have dental implants, you have made an excellent decision for your teeth and your smile. Dental implants can permanently replace missing teeth. There is not much you need to do to keep them in good condition, but there are a few things you should never do to prevent damage.

Chewing and Biting Anything but Food

Due to its robustness, dental implants can allow you to eat various healthy, delicious foods. However, just like natural teeth, they will break if you try to bite into or chew on something too hard, such as the plastic wrapping on your newest Amazon order, your nails, or the ice left in your glass after you have finished your drink.

Smoking

Smoking is incredibly detrimental to your oral health since it weakens the gums and erodes the enamel of your teeth. Smoking increases the likelihood of gum disease, which can threaten dental implants if you already have them. It is possible to lose dental implants if gum disease is not treated, which results in a receding gum line and a weakening jawbone.

Ignoring the Need to Visit the Dentist

You should see the dentist at least twice a year regardless, but after getting teeth replaced, you may need to see them more frequently. If you have regular dental checkups, you can save your dental implants from any unhealthy issues.

Lack of Flossing

After getting dental implants, flossing must become a daily habit. Flossing is the only way to get rid of the bits of food and germs that form plaque and gum disease, so if you have gotten out of the habit, it is time to get back into it.
