Face Trauma And Oral Surgery

Posted on 4/10/2023 by Dr. Shaun Rai
Face Trauma And Oral SurgeryWhile the most common cause of oral surgery is tooth decay and gum disease, oral surgeries are sometimes necessary because of trauma. In fact, around 20% of all oral surgeries occur because someone experiences trauma to the face. Trauma to the face can happen because of automobile accidents or sports injuries. Here are some possible surgeries people with facial trauma can experience.

About Oral Surgeries

One of the most common oral surgeries for trauma is restorative dentistry. Whether you lose one tooth, several teeth, or all of your teeth, you may be a good candidate for dental implants. Dental implants are prosthetic teeth that are attached to your jawbone with titanium screws.

Before you can have implants, your mouth will need to heal from the trauma of the accident or injury. After your healing has taken place, an oral surgeon can then implant the screws to prepare for your prosthetic tooth cap. Usually, your jaw will take a few weeks to heal from the titanium implants. Once the screws are in place, and your jaw has healed, you'll be ready for beautiful, prosthetic teeth.

Other Restorative Practices

What if the trauma to your mouth has left you with chipped, cracked, or broken teeth? Depending on the nature of the injury, dentists or oral surgeons can place crowns or veneers on your teeth. Crowns are metal caps with porcelain overlays that fit over the injured teeth to protect them. If you have several broken, chipped, or cracked teeth from facial trauma, you may want to opt for veneers. Veneers are porcelain overlays that look much like shells that can cover either your upper or lower teeth or both. Veneers can instantly restore your teeth to their original beauty. No matter how severe the trauma is to your jaw, oral surgeons can restore your smile and replace your teeth.
