Oral surgery procedures like tooth extractions or implant placement can sometimes cause mild to moderate pain afterward. Your oral surgeon has a range of options available to help you effectively manage and control discomfort during your recovery.
Local Anesthesia
The most basic pain control technique is local anesthesia, usually given as an injection at the site during your procedure. This numbs the area to block pain during the surgery. The numbing effect wears off gradually over several hours after the procedure.
Prescription Medications
Your oral surgeon may prescribe more potent pain-relieving medications to take after your surgery. These are usually taken for just a few days until the most significant soreness subsides. Common options include prescription ibuprofen, Vicodin, Percocet, or codeine. Follow dosage instructions carefully.
Cold Therapy
Applying an ice pack intermittently to the outside of your face over the surgery site can provide pain relief and reduce swelling. Use an ice pack wrapped in a towel for 10-20 minutes at a time, taking breaks in between. This is most helpful for the first 1-2 days when pain levels tend to be highest.
Diet Modification
Sticking to cool, soft foods is key for the first few days after oral surgery. Avoid very hot or spicy foods, crunchy foods like nuts or chips, and acidic foods like citrus fruits or juices, which can irritate the surgery site. Cool, smooth foods like yogurt, apple sauce, blended soups, and protein shakes are gentler in your mouth.
Stay Hydrated
Drinking plenty of water keeps you hydrated, an important factor in healing. Avoid alcohol and caffeine, which can promote dehydration. Hydration supports the healing process and keeps the surgery site more comfortable.
Salt Water Rinses
Gently rinsing your mouth with salt water helps keep the area clean as it heals. Use warm salt water and avoid forceful rinsing. Good oral hygiene protects against infection and reduces pain.
Your oral surgeon can guide you on optimal pain control for your situation. Following their recommendations and using multiple pain relief techniques provides the most effective management during your recovery from oral surgery.
