Sleep apnea is a prevalent sleep-related breathing disorder. It is characterized by repeated interruptions in breathing during sleep. Obstructive sleep apnea happens when throat muscles block the airway due to relaxation, causing breathing to stop and start repeatedly during sleep. Snoring is a common sign of this condition. Surgery is usually considered only if other treatments have not worked or are not suitable. Three types of surgery can be used to treat obstructive sleep apnea.
Tissue Removal Surgery
One common way to treat obstructive sleep apnea is through uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP). This is a surgical procedure in which tissue from the back of the mouth and the top of the throat is removed by a surgeon. Sometimes, the tonsils and adenoids are also removed during this procedure. UPPP is done in a hospital setting and involves the use of a general anesthetic, which puts you in a sleep-like state.
Maxillomandibular Adjustment
In dental practice, your dentist may recommend adjusting the upper and lower jaws to treat sleep apnea. Maxillomandibular advancement is a surgical procedure in which the upper and lower parts of the jaw are shifted forward, affecting the other facial bones. This adjustment increases the space behind the tongue and soft palate, reducing the likelihood of obstruction during sleep.
Tracheostomy for Sleep Apnea
If other treatments prove ineffective and you are facing life-threatening obstructive sleep apnea, a tracheostomy might be necessary. This surgical procedure involves creating an opening in the neck, through which a metal or plastic tube is inserted to facilitate breathing. By bypassing the obstructed air passage in the throat, air can flow in and out of the lungs, ensuring proper oxygenation.
Obstructive Sleep Apnea Surgery Risks
All three types of surgery carry risks. For instance, maxillomandibular adjustments can change your appearance. All surgical procedures also involve a considerable level of blood loss. Therefore, the dentist will provide a detailed list of risks before undertaking it.
