What Are Buried Dental Roots
Buried dental roots most commonly occur because of previous dental extractions, where they are intentionally or accidentally left behind. They can also result from facial injuries that cause dental fractures. Also known as retained dental roots, they can be a source of pain and necessitate removal.
Who Needs Buried Dental Root Surgery
Surgical removal of dental roots is usually used for patients with fragmented, decayed teeth. When a decayed tooth breaks off in fragments, a simple extraction might lead to surgery if the tooth has become weak and brittle. This involves removing the decayed parts one piece at a time.
This surgery may also be necessary for patients with impacted teeth, where most of the tooth crown and remaining parts are buried below the gum line. Conventional tooth extraction may not be feasible for those with curved dental roots. In such cases, surgical removal is necessary.
Risks Associated With Buried Root Surgery
This procedure carries several risks, including bleeding in the affected area and infection. To prevent infections, patients are prescribed antibiotics, which must be taken for several days to avoid the development of an abscess. Sometimes, the blood clot that forms at the surgical site may become dislodged, causing bleeding. This can be managed by placing surgical gauze over the site.
Other rarer complications exist. For instance, injury to surrounding areas, particularly the nerves, can occur. Additionally, there have been reports of the mandible fracturing due to excessive force.
