What to Have In Your Home Prior to Having Oral Surgery

Posted on 5/10/2019 by Dr. Shaun Rai
What to Have In Your Home Prior to Having Oral SurgeryOral surgery is not always a pleasant experience. It is also a very necessary experience at times. Oral surgery can help a person with their oral and overall health. One of the keys to making oral surgery a better experience is planning.

Part of a good plan is having certain things at home to make recovery from the surgery easier. We recommend having these things in the home for after oral surgery.

Gathering the Supplies

Having the right supplies ready in the home will help with the discomfort that follows oral surgery. The supplies can help with the different needs that you will have after the surgery.

•  Pain medications - Ibuprofen is an over the counter medication that will help with pain and swelling after surgery. Some may also want to alternate extra strength Tylenol with the ibuprofen for better pain management.
•  Nausea medicine - Anesthesia used during surgery can cause nausea and upset stomachs. Prescription and over the counter medications can help with this.
•  Ice packs - Some type of ice pack or even a bag of frozen vegetables can help after surgery.
•  Gauze - Some bleeding happens after surgery. Gauze can help control the bleeding.
•  Food - Most oral surgeries require a soft food diet for a few days make sure to have plenty of nutritious soft food ready to go.

Getting Help
Most people are miserable after oral surgery and that is okay. It is a good idea to have someone to help with the aftercare for some time after the surgery. It is also important to create a list of phone numbers of who to contact for different problems that may occur following surgery. Putting our dental offices on speed dial is another good idea.
