Top Ways of Managing TMJ Until We Can See YouTMJ, or temporomandibular joint dysfunction, can become quite painful to the person that is experiencing it. Sometimes, they may experience it for a long time before they seek any type of remedy because they feel that it is not a serious issue or one that cannot be fixed.

Managing the Discomfort of TMJ

If you are waiting to come into our office and speak with our professionals, there are some things that can be done to reduce the effects of TMJ.

We recommend that you use over the counter medications and anti-inflammatory options to reduce swelling and pain. You can also use heat or cold packs on the area that is bothering you. It is also recommended that you eat softer foods, as chewing harder ones may irritate the area more. Taking smaller bites puts less pressure on the jaw, which can also help alleviate some of the pain.

Relaxing the facial muscles is another way to reduce the effects of TMJ. Relax, close your eyes, and listen to something soothing to distract you while you relax the area that is causing issues until you can see us. Once you come into our office, we will consider the many treatment options that are available to use.

Therapy, mouth devices and splints, as well as medications can be used to reduce the effects of TMJ in any patients that we see.
