Bad Habits Could Harm Your Jaw

Posted on 10/5/2020 by Dr. Shaun Rai
Bad Habits Could Harm Your JawSometimes we are in such a hurry, our lives busy and rushed, we fail to realize something we are doing will have a lasting impact on our health. This is particular true for our dental health. Even if we practice good oral hygiene by flossing and brushing regularly and use mouthwash to rinse after each mean, we can still damage our teeth by doing things I'm sure we have all done from one time to another.

What are the Bad Habits?

These habits we might not give a second thought about can hurt not only your teeth but in some cases your jaw. The first one is biting fingernails. It is usually anxiety driven. When we get nervous, we tend to nibble on things. It is a natural thing. But the act of biting fingernails is not only not good for the teeth because it can cause them to chip but it is bad for the jaw too. The act of biting fingernails puts the jaw in an awkward, forward position while putting pressure on it. This can cause TMJ issues.

Brushing too hard is just as bad as not brushing at all. Brushing twice a day is one of the best practices for good dental health. Brushing too hard can damage teeth and gums opening up the door for infection.

Grinding your teeth and clenching your jaw can significantly wear not only your teeth but put strain on your jaw as well.

Snacking all day is another bad habit. After we eat, bacteria are released in the mouth to eat the food particles left behind. These bacteria are also cavity causing.

We should not use our teeth as tools, whether to tear open a bag of chips or to hold something when our hands are full. We can discuss possible solutions to ending these bad habits at your convenience.
