Understanding What a Dental Crown Is Used For

Posted on 11/16/2020 by Dr. Shaun Rai
Understanding What a Dental Crown Is Used ForA dental crown is a tooth-shaped cap that covers a whole tooth. They are used to treat a wide variety of cosmetic and dental health concerns.

Fractured Teeth

It is very common to chip, crack, or fracture a tooth. Cracked teeth can be painful, and if left untreated, they are highly vulnerable to infection. A fracture that extends below the gum line can lead to an abscessed tooth or even gum disease. A dental crown covers up and strengthens a fractured tooth, preventing infection and further damage to the structure of your tooth and the sensitive pulp inside. Crowns are often placed after a root canal is performed to treat an infection or mild gum disease.

Decayed Teeth

For teeth that have decayed to the point where a filling is not enough to repair the issue, crown placement may be necessary. We will prepare the decayed tooth for crown placement by shaving away the infected area. The crown will strengthen and protect the compromised tooth from further decay. Plus, having a crown placed will allow you to eat, drink, brush, and floss normally without the discomfort and sensitivity that your decayed tooth may have caused you before.

Missing Teeth

Dental crowns are an excellent way to restore missing teeth, either as part of a bridge or supported by a dental implant. A dental bridge is a row of crowns and prosthetic teeth (pontics) that are used to cover up one or more missing teeth in a single area. The crowns are cemented onto healthy teeth on either side of the gap, and pontics replace the tooth or teeth that have been lost. A dental implant is a titanium rod that is surgically rooted in your jaw and anchors a crown in place. Both bridges and implant-supported crowns restore the appearance and function of your teeth, and prevent serious health problems that can occur if you do not replace missing teeth.

If you have any of the above issues or even cosmetic concerns such as discolored or uneven teeth, a dental crown might be right for you. Contact our office today to learn more.
