What is a Cleft Lip

Posted on 2/22/2021 by Rai Oral Surgery and Dental Implants
What is a Cleft LipThis is a common congenital problem which occurs in 1 out of 700 births. In many cases, these will coincide with cleft palates as well. These conditions can create problems with speech, suckling, facial deformity, deafness, and potential psychological problems. If not fixed early, these problems could become even more complicated as the child grows.

Our staff can provide restorative procedures from the neonatal stage through adult teeth eruption. While parents can be alarmed because of the way their child's face may appear, it can be corrected with a surgery.

Causes of a Cleft Lip?

Cleft lips are typically easy to notice because of a dent showing in the area of the upper lip. It affects the shape and function of the lips. It can reach beyond the lip and reach upward toward the patient's nose. These are typically easier to notice than a cleft palate because the cleft lip condition is entirely external.

The cause of a cleft lip is attributed to genetics and can happen to any child regardless of their age, gender or race. Either one or both parents passed on the trait through their DNA. If it is discovered other evaluation may need to occur because it could be a sign of another more serious syndrome.

A cleft lip occurs when the soft tissue making up the face, lip, and palate fails to fuse completely. This usually occurs in the two months of pregnancy. With the tissue not growing together correctly, an opening is left which can result in a host of health problems. This can include teeth not erupting properly and speaking incorrectly as well as emotional problems.
