Posted on 2/8/2021 by Rai Oral Surgery and Dental Implants
How Do I Know if I Have Sleep Apnea?Sleep apnea is something most people have heard of but probably do not know much about. It is a serious sleep disorder which can greatly impact the medical health of patients in ways most could never imagine. Thankfully, there are a few different types of treatment to address the symptoms related to sleep apnea. There are risk factors which can make some patients more susceptible to experiencing sleep apnea.

Symptoms of Sleep Apnea

Some symptoms are easy to spot while others are not. In some cases, sleep apnea can go unnoticed for years. For some patients, they may snore loudly and wake themselves up because of it. If patients notice they have chronic bad breath or wake up with chronic dry mouth, they could also be experiencing sleep apnea. These symptoms arise because the mouth is held open while snoring all night drying out the mouth and allowing the bacteria which cause bad breath to build up. Another indicator is morning headaches. Sleep apnea can hit any age, race or gender. It has even been diagnosed in children.

Types of Sleep Apnea

Believe it or not, there are different kinds of sleep apnea. Sleep apnea, by definition, is a disruption to the patient's sleep cycle. For some, the disruption can be caused by something physical, an abnormal bit of tissue, or an anomaly in the oral cavity. In others, it can be the brain not properly sending instructions to the muscles needed for breathing.

For sleep apnea caused by an obstruction, it is called obstructive sleep apnea or OSA. When the brain does not send the correct signals, it is known as central sleep apnea or CSA. For those circumstances where the patient experiences both it is called complex sleep apnea syndrome or CSAS.

Sleep apnea is a serious condition which can cause respiratory problems and heart problems. It is important to determine if you have Sleep apnea, and we are here to help diagnose your sleeping disorder symptoms.
