Should You Exercise Following Oral Surgery?You may undergo oral surgery for health or aesthetic reasons. Given that most oral surgeries are outpatient, you may want to resume your everyday life afterward. However, we recommend that you refrain from any strenuous activities for the first two to four days. This is because exercising can affect your healing by increasing your blood pressure. Increased blood pressure may dislodge your clot, causing pain and bleeding. Exercising too soon can also cause a dry socket.

Dry Socket


After tooth extraction, you will have a blood clot over the wound. This clot protects your nerve endings in the tooth socket and provides a foundation for the growth of a new bone. If you jump into your exercise routine too soon after extraction, your blood clot will dislodge before your wound heals, exposing your nerves, causing pain in your socket. Also, dry sockets can cause inflammation. In such cases, it is advisable to consult with our professionals immediately to remedy the situation.

When to Start Exercising


After waiting for up to a week, you can slowly resume exercising if you had minor surgery. Alternatively, you can wait until you clear your medication, as they could mask pain and give you a false impression that you are good to exercise. If your oral surgery was complicated, you might need to wait up to a month before exercising, and you should start with simple exercise when you resume. If you experience swelling or bleeding on your wound after resuming exercises, you should stop and contact us immediately. Other signs that you should be aware of include dizziness, fever, and difficulty in speech and eating. Given the above risks of exercising after oral surgery, it would be best to maximize adequate rest and focus on recovery to prevent complications.
