The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) gets a lot of attention in our office. This joint is unique as it not only connects your jawbone to your skull on each side of your face, but it also combines a hinge action with a sliding motion. Due to genetics, arthritis at the joint's cartilage, jaw injury, or habitually grinding or clenching your teeth, a patient may experience discomfort at this joint. When that discomfort becomes evident, we feel it is important to stop in for a visit to our office to help you determine your next step toward normalcy.
TMJ Symptoms
Perhaps you have experienced a tooth ache. While this is not uncommon, if you also have accompanying discomfort in or around your ear or difficulty opening or closing your mouth you may have TMJ issues. Jaw tenderness and difficulty chewing can be indicative as well. You may be able to hear a popping sound or grating sensation. If so, we suggest that it is time to come into our office to have a diagnosis regarding your TMJ. If a person is experiencing TMJ discomfort, on either side or both sides of their face, we work with the patient to determine the next steps.
TMJ Diagnosis
In order to properly form a diagnosis, we will need to listen to your jaw, as well as feel the joints as you open and close your mouth. We will also note your range of motion. If we suspect a problem we may need additional x-rays. In some cases, a CT scan is necessary to reveal more clearly the bones involved. Lastly, if we think the joint's disk or soft tissue may be compromised, we will request an MRI. Regardless of your next steps, we are here to walk with you through the process.
