Posted on 8/22/2022 by Dr. Shaun Rai
What Is a Head and Neck Exam?A head and neck exam is an essential diagnostic tool for the prevention of head and neck cancer. Head and neck cancers usually develop in the mouth, throat, larynx, or sinuses. During a head and neck exam, our specialists examine your head, jaw, and neck for any early warnings of cancer. We check for lumps, color changes, and legions. This procedure is painless and invaluable in cancer prevention.

Who needs a head and neck exam?

If you are above the age of forty-five, you probably should schedule a head and neck exam with us. This is due to the fact that individuals in this age group are at a higher risk of developing oral cancer. Regular checkups preferably every six months will help detect oral cancer at an early stage. The earlier the cancer is detected, the greater your chances of surviving after treatment. Common signs of oral cancer include swelling, sores, lumps, or pain when chewing.

Procedure for head and neck exam

During your head and neck exam, our specialists will first direct you to take a seat. We will then examine your lips, nose, and thyroid. After this, our specialists will gently feel your neck and under your jaws with both hands for any signs of cancer. We will then instruct you to open your mouth and then proceed to examine your tongue tonsils and cheeks. Our experts will gently feel the inside of your lips for any tumors. You may also be required to stick out your tongue so that we can examine its texture and color.

Schedule an appointment today with our practice. During your appointment, our dentists will conduct a head and neck exam and advice you on the measures to take to reduce your chances of developing oral cancer.
