Multiple Extractions
Virginia Beach, VA

Patient Learning Surgical Instructions for Multiple Extractions at Rai Oral Surgery & Dental Implants in Virginia Beach, VA The possible reasons for multiple tooth extractions can be as numerous as the extractions themselves. From facial trauma to tooth decay and advanced gum disease, no matter what the cause, Rai Oral Surgery & Dental Implants is here to help. Of course, extracting more than one tooth at a time is different from removing only one or two teeth. Just the same, the aftercare procedures are different as well. But don’t worry, we’ve got everything laid out for you so that post-surgery you won’t have to worry about anything. Just follow our instructions and you’ll be on the road to recovery from your oral surgery in no time.

Dealing with Bleeding

A small amount of bleeding is to be expected following your oral surgery extractions. This can be managed by placing gauze pads in your mouth over the surgical spots and then gently biting down. If you have been given dentures to wear, they will also help with the bleeding, though you may experience some run off on the sides of them.

Alleviating Pain and Swelling

It’s probably no surprise to you that pain and swelling are common symptoms following multiple tooth extractions. Mild and moderate pain can be managed with simple over the counter medicine such as Tylenol. Aspirin-based medications should be avoided, as they carry a higher risk of bleeding. Of course, we will provide you with a prescription for stronger pain medicine, in the event that your oral surgery symptoms are elevated.

During the first 24 hours, you can use ice to alleviate any swelling that you experience. Simply wrap an ice pack in a towel and hold it in place for about 20 minutes. Then, leave the ice off for another 20 minutes and repeat as necessary. After 24 hours and for up to 48 hours post-surgery, you can use a moist heat source to reduce swelling, as well as reduce any bruising and discoloration quicker. As you did with the ice, alternate 15 minutes on and 15 minutes off as needed.

The Do’s and Dont’s of Diet

As you can imagine, your mouth will be sore following your multiple tooth extraction oral surgery. As such, your diet at the start and while you heal should consist of soft foods only. Then, slowly over time as you heal, you can resume eating the foods you enjoyed before surgery. Don’t forget to drink plenty of water, in general, but especially during this recovery period.

Limit Your Level of Physical Activity

Try not to overdo it during the first 24 hours following your oral surgery. Remember to rest and sit or lie down with your head in an elevated position. Avoid any activities where you might overexert yourself such as exercise or manual labor. These can increase your risk of pain, swelling, and bleeding.

After Surgery Oral Care

You should always take good care of your mouth, but this is especially important following oral surgery for multiple tooth extractions. Abstain from rising and spitting during the first 24 hours in order to avoid dislodging blood clots. After 24 hours, remember to rinse every few hours with a saltwater solution. This helps to keep your mouth clean by killing bacteria. Be sure to be especially careful around surgical sites when brushing and flossing. Continue to rinse with a saltwater solution a few times a day even after your follow up visit with us.

When You Should Give Us A Call
